Benchmarking Study Reports
These reports cover Benchmarking Study Project financed by BP and its co-ventures in the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli, Shahdeniz, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and South Caucasus Pipeline projects, UNDP Azerbaijan and Eurasia Foundtion from October 2005 till October 2006 and was continued with financing support of by BP and its co-ventures in the Azeri-Chirag- Guneshli, Shahdeniz, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and South Caucasus Pipeline projects, UNDP Azerbaijan further till August 31st 2007. The project main objective was to support the transparency among MFI sector in Azerbaijan necessary for improving institutional performance and greater access to diversified source of funding for growth and further development. This project was initiated to address two main problems of the microfinance industry: lack of international awareness and a lack of capital. The primary project objectives were: (1) To provide benchmarks for MFIs to understand relative trends and drivers in their own performance in a comparative perspective; (2) Raise public and government awareness about the role of microfinance in the country; (3) To facilitate establishment of proper regulatory framework fostering further development of MF sector in the country.
In particular, Azerbaijan Benchmarking Report 2004 investigates the performance of Azerbaijan MFIs through the lens of industry standard performance metrics. It is the first report in industry literature of Azerbaijan microfinance and should be useful for financial institutions, donor agencies and investors as well as the government and other interested parties. The analysis dissects and compares Azerbaijan MFI performance measures and their drivers in a global and regional context.
And Azerbaijan Benchmarking Trends Report 2004-2005 presents comparative performance of Azerbaijani Microfinance Institutions that have reported to MIX Market during last 2 consecutive years, illustrated trend lines would allow MFI managers and board members to monitor their institution's performance on country scale. It is the second report in industry literature of Azerbaijan microfinance and should be useful for financial institutions, donor agencies and investors as well as the government and other interested parties.
Over the past few years the Azerbaijan microfinance sector has evolved with remarkable growth in outreach, scale and competition among microfinance institutions (MFIs). The number of active borrowers has increased sixfold since 2004, and from 1 January 2003 to 30 September 2009, the aggregate portfolio value for non bank credit organizations (NBCOs) increased from 10 million USD to over 171 million USD.
This report, jointly produced by the Azerbaijan Microfinance Association (AMFA) and the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX), analyzes the trends in performance and growth of Azeri MFIs in view of the financial crisis and economic recession in the region as well as the changing legislative environment in 2008.
